I am Michelle Meighan, born in Brooklyn NY to immigrant parents. My parents, Gilbert and Edna Meighan came from the tiny country of Belize, Central America (then known as British Honduras).
The country was once part of Guatemala that was leased by England for 99 years.Pirates "of the Caribbean" really, they were....got shipwrecked on the barrier reef, and "discovered" the land complete with Mayan pyramids and of course, people already there.
I hear our line comes from two tall strapping half brothers, a Meighan and a McSweeny that traveled to Belize. The slave trade was alive and well back then, and slaves were used to log the various types of wood that are indeginous to the area.At some point, the blood of Meighan and McSweeny mixed with the blood of their slaves. As a woman in my water aerobics class told me last St. Patrick's day "your family just worked for Irish people"...nevermind my father's red braid he wore till his mother cut it when he was 6 yrs old.I too sport red tones, and when I bleach it, it turns carrot red.
My father was born in 1924, his father Albert in the late 1800's and his grandfather John, in the mid 1880's.I don't know anyone's name beyond that.
Just wanted you to know you've got a Belizean contingent of Meighans alive and well scattered between Belize, California, Texas, Chicago, Florida and of course, New York!We sport a full range of skin colors from white to dark and hair textures straight to wool.
