Nova Scotia Meikles frm Gallowayshire
Hello. I am working on my Meikle ancestor, James Meikle, born (I estimate) about 1775 in Gallowayshire, Scotland. and his descendants, and would like to know more about his forebears. As far as I can figure, Gallowayshire is in southern Scotland. He married Mary Trimwell in 1799. He was in the army for a number of years (English) and some of his children, as a result, were born in England. The rest, I beleive, in Scotland. He came to Nova Scotia, Pictou area, in 1820, with his wife, four sons, James A., William, John, Alexander, and four daughters, names unknown, one of whom married a shipbuilder named William Adamson. They settled first at Blue Mountain, vicinity of Pictou and New Glasgow. Then moved to Meiklefield and intermarried with my McCulloch relatives who were from the highlands, and also settled there. I have the wives and many children of the four sons, and many descendants of James A.Meikle, son of the first James, who was my own great-great grandfather. I would like to connect with any possible relatives, or with anyone who knows more, and any information further back in Scotland. The people in Nova Scotia pronounce this name "Meekle." The elder James' son William became a locally famous ship builder in Nova Scotia, a true master of his craft. I have a little info about him, and the name of some of his outstanding vessels.
