Hi Susan, I was interested in your message and may be able to add a little information. First, Galloway (not Gallowayshire) is a county in S-W Scotland My great grandfather in 1917 recorded as much of the Meikle family history as he could (my branch, that is). James Meikle and family moved from Bathgate to Glasgow in 1792. Prior to that he was a tenant farmer at a farm called Torphicen Mains, near Bathgate, which is near Edinburgh. Of his ancestry I have little information, but he must have been born about 1744 since his wife Mary Thomson was born in that year. There was a Lord Torphicen still alive in 1917 when my great grandfather made his notes, but whether such a person still exists I have no idea (I doubt it). I have a lot more information about the family from then on and am happy to tell you anything I can. The name is certainly quite common now, although when I was a boy in Glasgow (in the 30s) I thought I was the only one. Hope this is of interest. Stewart Meikle.
