Sue: Petrus VAN MELDER did not die aboard ship as has been reported by some researchers. He died at Natchitoches and the record of his burial is in the Natchitoches Catholic Church. Here is what I received from the church:
DEATH/BURIAL: Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, LA.
On September 4, 1836, Father D'Hauve buried Pierre Van Melder husband of Isabelle Dehert, around 36 years old.
Two children of Petrus and Isabelle also died at Natchitoches. Here are the church records:
DEATH/BURIAL: Immaculate Conception Church, Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, LA.
Burial record. On October 23, 1835, Father Francais buried Theresa Van Melder, daughter of Pierre Van Melder and Isabelle de Hert.
This was a newborn child and no age was given. Theresa was not mentioned in the diary of Joannes Michael VAN MELDER.
DEATH/BURIAL: Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, LA.
On November 1, 1835, Father D'Hauve buried Desire Van Melder son of Pierre Van Melder and Isabelle De Hert, about 3 years old. "Originally from Miscomp Province du Brabant meridione en Belgique."
This is the child, Desiderus, named in the diary of Joannes Michael Van Melder, brother of Petrus Van Melder.
I hope this clears up the confusion. Bob
