Your story about the three Melders brothers being run out of Belgium is very interesting. In order for me to try to trace the brother who supposedly made it to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) it is critical for me to have some idea of the time frame involved. My research into the Melder genealogy
in the archives of the Dutch Reformed Church, Wolvendaal in Sri Lanka indicates that prior to the coming of the British as invaders in 1796 there were no Melders in Ceylon. There were Mulders, Milders, Moelders etc but no
Melders. The Melder (not Melders) surname occurs only with the advent of the British. I presumed therefore that the surname Melder was an anglicized version of Mulder or one of the other surnames I have mentioned. Your message sheds new light on this puzzle. Therefore some idea of the date the third Melders came to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) is critical.
As your account mentions no dates, it would be useful if your brother R.L. Melder could try to trace the Melder he met at Charles DeGualle Airport once again. Since they had met when R.L. went thru' Paris he may have his name, contact address or telephone number that will help us to reestablish contact. Alternatively the security people at Charles DeGaulle Airport may help to trace this Melder. Without this information it is well nigh impossible to trace the third Melders that was said to have come to Ceylon (Sri Lanka). There are well over a dozen Melder families in Sri Lanka and without a starting point in any research effort it would be an impossible task to trace the missing Melders ancestors.
I am presently in Sri Lanka, but I also live in Melbourne Australia and go there in early July. My email address there is [email protected].
