Melichars from Pavlov, Bohemia
I am descended from Frank Melichar, born about 1855, who came to Traverse City, Michigan from Pavlov, Bohemia in 1904.He joined his daughter Mary Melichar who had come a couple years before to earn money for the family to come over.Frank died of stone cutters consumption after only four months here, but the rest of the family came to Traverse City shortly after his death to begin their new life.
Frank's wife was Josefa Vantak, born about 1861 in Bohemia, died in Traverse City in 1926.Their children were Mary (Sleder, Sladek), Anna (Brief), Charles, Rose, Casper (my grandfather), and Othelia (Dempsey).
Frank may have been a brother or cousin to Ferdinand Melichar and Joe Melichar, both in Traverse City near the time Frank was.
My family has said that "Melichar" is an Americanized version of "Melchior," who was one of the three wise men according to Christian tradition. My grandfather's name was composed of the three wise men's names, "Casper Balthazar Melchior," which of course was ruined by the name change!
Hope to find more Melichars out there who can link me to the old country!
