Julia, I can't tell you much about George III's father, but I do have some information from the 1900 and 1920 US Censuses. The one for 1900 has George (born Oct. 1891), his sister Mary (born Jan. 1889) and their mother Gertrude (born April 1867) living in the house of George's grandparent Dana Lockwood, at 73 Congress Street, Newark, NJ (Vol. 41, Enumeration District 26, Sheet 8, Line 42). In 1900, these three live at 79 Franklin Terrace, Irvington, Essex County, NJ (Vol. 31, ED 60, Sh. 6, Line 17). The 1890 Census was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1921, and I can't find anything in the 1880 Census that looks promising. Nor can I find anything in SOF or my own After The Story which is of any help. I'd start by checking at whatever state agency in NJ which keeps vital records for the state, or with the Essex County registry of probate, and look for a death certificate for a George Melick in 1891. If NJ follows the Massachusetts format, the name and place of birth of the parents will appear on it; also, there may be a will filed or a record of the administtration of Gerge's estate. Keep us all posted on how you're doing, and good luck!
