Hi Earl,
The church record certainly does cause one to pause for a moment, doesn't it? It’s interesting, but I don’t see a potential connection to the 18th century NJ Todd-Melick/Malick marriage/s. The names for the church membership + dates for when they joined appear to be listed across the page rather than by column which also suggests the possibility that Mary Todd might have accompanied the Malick women. That might be a coincidence, but I found it intriguing that no date was given for Mary, causing me to wonder why. The only Mary Todd I found in 1850 Moniteau Co. was 10 y/o. Perhaps Mary’s age had something to do with the date omission? The 1850 census (familysearch images)of that county included the families of William Todd, 62 TN and Tillman Todd, 38 TN(think Mary was Tillman's dau.) and a Jesse Todd 55 KY.If young Mary Todd did accompany the Malick women, one wonders if there might be some sort of kinship connection through Martha (b. 1792/1793 SC), rather than David Malick, to either the Todds or their wives. What do you think? Interesting possibilities for anyone who wanted to follow this up. You might be right that the Malick women were most likely the wife and eldest daughter of David enumerated in 1850 Sullivan Co., but more would be needed for a more certain identification. You didn’t mention finding David or any members of his family in 1860 - so, did you find any of them? (My present access to records is limited.)
For myself, David Malick’s parentage is of greater interest than Mary Todd. Unfortunately the records at familysearch do not include the pre-1850 censuses. While I did examine David's 1850 household I couldn’t follow up much of anything suggested by the census data. Born in PA, my first thought would be that David was probably a grandson of Peter (1719), but I do recall that at least one of the sons of either Gottfried or Andrew (a Jacob, maybe? All this is from memory) moved across the river into PA so, for me at least, the potential parentage along those lines would need to be eliminated before focusing on the children of Peter’s sons. Perhaps you’ve already done this?
Then David’s wife Martha shows a SC birth place and the oldest daughter in their 1850 hh shows a KY birth place. I did check familysearch’s transcribed marriage records for KY and IN but found nothing. If the 1850 ages and birth places were correct I would have expected David to have been somewhere in KY in 1820, but you believe you found him in 1820 Jefferson Co., IN? That’s interesting. Considering the possibility of census error I suppose Catherine could have been born in KY before or after the 1820 enumeration, but if her 1850 age is correct one would suppose before. Depending on whether they were coming or going, (presumably coming) the KY county may only have been across the river - or in that general northern vicinity of KY. Consequently one also wonders if David met Martha in KY, and when he met her. Was he on some sort of expedition traveling down the Ohio river? (Jefferson Co., IN and a KY Co. suggests the Ohio R. as his probable travel route, don't you think?) A son of Peter’s John might make that trip, but I have a vague recollection of a tale (rumor?) of one or two Melick brothers (not Peter’s John, but maybe Peter’s grandson/s ) traveling to or spending some time in a border county of western PA.
If Catherine was the oldest child one would presume the marriage was probably + or - 1818 and both David and Martha were older (pretty old for a southern woman’s first marriage.) Did Catherine appear to be present in David’s 1820 household? And was there more than one child in his 1820 household? What did his 1830 household look like?
If Catherine was their oldest child one does wonder if David might have been the son of Peter’s oldest - John and his (presumed) 2nd wife Catherine Scholler - and named for David’s mother. (you probably noticed that daughter Jemima’s children appear to be named after both of her parents suggesting possible naming traditions within her natal family.)If Catherine (1st known dau) and John (2nd known son) were named for David’s side of the family then Jemima (2nd known dau) and Samuel (1st known son) might be named for Martha’s side. (As I recall John and Catherine Scholler Melick/Malick also had a son named Samuel.)
The aprox 6 yr lapse between Catherine and Jemima suggests another (married?) child, a miscarriage or a child’s death, but also the possibility that either David or Martha was a step parent to Catherine.(Any indication of the latter in the 1820 census?) Both Jemima and Samuel appeared to be married in MO since their children show a MO birth place(but I didn’t look for O’Kelsey or some of those other variations of the surname in Indiana marriages) so if David’s earlier census household suggests another child she/he might be found in MO marriages..
