Melrose in Edinburgh, Scotland to Australia
I just read through some of the Melrose names and dates that were submitted to LDS by Susan Neale of Australia. Susan, if you are out there somewhere, would you please write to me or post here?
In my files I have a Christina Davidson who married William MacLeish Melrose on October 21, 1856 in Edinburgh. William was a younger brother to your Andrew Melrose born 1819, who must have gone to Australia fairly early in life as he was married there in 1844, according to your records. Did any of his siblings go there as well? Are you familiar with any Davidson's who may have also gone to Australia and who may descend from same family?
What happened to the parents in this family- James Melrose and Helen Wood? Because the Melrose children are living with an aunt in Edinburgh in 1841, I assume the parents were both deceased?
How was she related to this family- was she a Bryden by marriage, if so, what was her maiden name? She is Elizabeth Bryden, head of her household in 1841, age 40 years, with a Robert Bryden age 15 years who must have been her son? or possibly another nephew? I will have to check that. The Bryden name is significant as some of your Andrew's children were given that name as a middle name.
I can account for William Melrose and wife Christina and family up to 1871, will have to have another look at the 1881 census to see if they were still in Scotland. Here is the marriage info for William and Christina, as retrieved from Scotlandspeople (pay) site:
Marriage info reads:
On the 21st day of October 1856 at 21 Leith Street, Edinburgh this marriage after BANNS was solemnized______ according to the ____of the Church of Scotland-
William MacLeish Melrose age 25, a Watchmaker, Bachelor, living at 34 Eglinton Street, Parish of ____, Glasgow, parents James Melrose, Watchmaker, deceased, and Helen Melrose, maiden name WOOD, Deceased
Christina Davidson, age 21, Spinster, living at 21 Leith Street, Edinburgh, parents Robert Davidson, Deceased and Janet Davidson, maiden name Ferguson.
I am looking forward to hearing from anyone who may be familiar with this Melrose or Davidson family. I see that some of the Melrose's in Australia may have lived at Bendigo?
