Elizabeth (1832-1880+) and Sarah C Melton (1834-1880+) GA, MS and LA

By Trish Elliott-Kashima June 18, 2011 at 04:55:44

What happened to Elizabeth and Sarah C. Melton, daughters of McKinney Melton and Harriet ------ (possibly Cloud, possibly Hughes) who was his second wife.

Elizabeth was born about 1832, in Georgia - probably Macon County.Sarah C was born ca 1834, also in Georgia, probably Macon Co.

They are in the 1850 and 1860 census in Attala Co Mississippi with their Mom and step father, James M. Davis. In 1870 they are with their mom and step father again, but they are in Pike County Mississippi. In 1880 the two unmarried women are in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana.I am guessing that they died in Louisiana.

I suspect their sister Mary (born ca 1839 in Georgia) died young, probably shortly after 1850 as she is shown in the 1850 census but not listed as a child in the monetary court fight over the estate of McKinney Melton in Georgia.

Sibling Wiley Bryant died in 1862 in Montgomery Alabama and sister Quennie/Quinnie married Joseph Frederick Cabler died in 1915 in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana.

I suspect mother and step father died between 1870 and 1880.

I have quite a bit of information on the children of McKinney Melton's first marriage, I am just trying to figure out what happened to Elizabeth and Sarah from the second marriage.

Thanks, Trish Elliott-Kashima, Lawrenceburg TN
