Hi J. Friedman,
Yes, I've read some of Dr. YDP's so called scholarly work, but no, I wasn't necessarily just referring that.Don't get me wrong, I respect the research done by some scholars, even if I don't always agree with the findings, and that's probably because I don't fully understand it all, especially as it pertains to enslaved, indentured servants, and FPOC.
Actually my query was in response to a recent post on a message board. The link is listed below. Maybe it will give you a better idea of what I'm talking about.
I've never done this before on a message board. Can't seem to find where to connect the link other than posting it in the body of this post. So here goes. I hope it comes through ok.
Quite a bit of research has been done on these lines by some of my relatives who are still getting information from the few surviving elders in my family. My cousins have done most of the slave research and to tell you the truth, I'm just starting to join them.I'm the "baby" in the group so to speak :-)
My cousin has sent me copies of things like slave records, some typed, some handwritten, that the slaveowner recorded of our ancestors births, marriages and deaths, etc. They also sent me official looking death certificates of some of our ancestors in which the informants stated that the surnames given on the various death certificates were in fact, a "slave names" which were legally "adopted" after slavery.
I'm not saying this person is wrong about their assertions but it's just interesting how people who claim to share the same ancestry would have totally different information. Most of what they posted appears to be copied and pasted from other websites/blogs or based on something passed down from their g-g-grandmother. I didn't really see documented evidence that any of this information pertained specifically to any of our ancestors.
My g-g-aunt who is still alive was told about the post. She basically says our ancestors were African/Native Americans, European (Irish), and "I don't know nothing bout no Melumgers, Cathlics, no red head folk and none of them other folks". :-)-djarrett
