This book is also on-line at the Multiracial Activist site. It is in a more compact form with a clickable table of contents but it doesn't have all of the links to articles and pictures this does. It is quicker to load, easier to print and easier to search.
2008DISCLAIMER In view of the present crisis in the Melungeon community over the question of some connection between Melungeons and Turks, I feel I must warn people once more that this book is very dated, that it is based on the literature which was available, and that much of the information given is mistaken or in error. This is especially true of the information about suspected or hoped for Turkish origins. It is known that Drake did not abandon any Turks in Virginia. While there might be a few Turks who got to America in other ways that made it into the very mixed ancestry of the Melungeons, they could not be significant compared to some other Mediterranean ethnicites. The claim that Melungeons are somehow Turkish-Americans is ludicrous. To state that Melungeons support the Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide is not only untrue and dishonest but very insulting.
