First, I want to thank you for pointing me at this board Ree. What follows is a brief view of the following allied families( Ree - note Susan McDaniel in a Pendergraft Marriage)
Lawson Rose Laughlin Woodard Martin Trent Pendergrass(Graft)
I am still trying to sort out all of mom's paperwork.
By the time these allied Families arrive in MO AR, it is in the early to mid 1800s. The settled quite a bit of SW MO NW Arkansas and some spread into areas adjacent to indian Territory. Keep in mind this is the FT Smith area as well
. My Grandmother moved in a covered wagon to Stella MO(McDonald County). This area is very beautiful with many streams and rivers, notably the Big and Little Sugar. The Lawson Rose and Laughlin Families settle in this area and name a small offshoot of one of the Big Sugar Trent Creek. There is a book about this area titled I think "Big Sugar Creek Country."
Example of another Intermarried Family is the Martin's Martin had settled in Sugar Creek Country of Benton County Near Pea Ridge. William Martin and family are in the area by 1860 ref: Distant Crossraods, Vol VII april 1990. His father was Thomas Martin who m elizabeth and show a land deed in the will book I of Hawkins Co. TN 17 may 1847.
Amanda Lawson died of Measles along with a sister I think in AR. She was 40. Samuel Wilkerson Rose was the eldest son of Robert Marsh Rose who was Husband of Amanda Lawson. Samuel Wilkerson was father of Amanda Sylvesta Rose, my Grandmother. RObert was Son of Samuel Rose who Married Lydia Marsh.
From the Lawson Family Reunion I find information from them that thus far the had not been able to find a marriage record for Wilkerson Lawson because he had lived in Buncombe Co. NC at the time of his marriage from this was gleaned that the story of seeing Indians in pens at the end of the trail of tears was why Amanda wouldn't register the children. This story is from the Lawson side of the family. From my frame of Reference is Black Granny wouldn't do so because of social stigma and how Indians were treated.
one son of WIlkerson Lawson son's was George Bert He and his Wife Clara Rose had a Ranch i NE OK and we visited there when I was a child several times. Bert let me ride his horse Jimmy up to the back of the ranch and back to the old sandstone farm house. Outdoor plumbing, well and very small. This was as I recall before 1955.
The Lawsons name is found in early records of Yorkshire. The Rose Name is Scottish origin but also Irish.
The Martins that I can address as far back as Thomas Martin Sr. b@1770 and lived in Hawkins Co TN. He married an Elizabeth. His eldest son WIlliam was b 1807 and he m Susan Wolf(Cherokee Indian according to her Tombstone) daughter of Dennis or George Wolf and Polly Bear.
This is the ancestors of the Martins who settle into the NW AR area sw MO area.
Mahalia Laughlin was b to Lydia Trent and John Lauglin.
She married Robert Rose, father ofSamuel Wilkerson Rose, father of Amanda Sylvesta,my grandmother. Grandma never used the name Amanda(though some relatives called her mandy). She said it sounded trashy(meaning indian or black or triracial I suppose). She always was known as Sylvesta.
Recall also that my Grandfather had the Calvert Role in his trunk at Wildhorse. Mom used to sneak in and read it another things. My grandmother was extremely hurt that my grandfather never entered the children of Vesta into the Role. This Role was in a tube that has since been lost. I mentioned this to Ree some time ago because I and another Calvert / Lemasters researcher are trying to find it. I know it passed to one of Arthurs brothers in 1930 or later and his son wouldn't remove the document afraid that it would deteriorate. We are still looking. It is either destroyed or in the hands of a descendent.
Robert Marsh Rose was born in Benton Co AR so his parents, Samuel andd Lydia Marsh came out of TN to AR/MO before 1850.
Another apparent allied family came out of Burke Co. NC which are descendents of Moses Pendergrass. his parents were Job Pendergraft and Mary Reel(m2). He m Margaret Mashburn. the Children of Moses who was born orange co nc follow:
ALfred Burton Pendergraft he m Rhoda A Ruthaford, Obedience married Nathaniel Etheridge THomas m emily Martha Edson Oldfield Ann m Jackson Ethridge James m Tabitha CHapman Wesley Powell m Ellen Rose(1) and (2)Susan N McDaniel- Ree she died in 1872. William m Elizabeth Durham(1) and Mary J Spring Susanna who was b in Tn died in 1851. Martha Matilda m James Gates(?) ANgeline who was born in Barry Co MO m Harvey J Lauglin.
There is an interesting story of the lawsons who migrated to the area: George B was killed by bushwhackers during the civil war in Benton Co AR...These were probably the Baldknobbers. George Came from TN. This George had two brothers who went to TX (c1835-1840) and were never heard from again.
The Rose also show Allied Families as Pendergraft and Spurlock. Above you will see that Rhoda Carter m Samuel Rose. and there is a John Carter and Rhoda Carter living next door to Ellen Rose Pendergraft in Barry CO Mo in 1850 Census so this Carter family apparently migrated out of TN along with the Rose and Lawson Families.
