"SUICIDE THEORY SCOUTED IN EDINBURG DEATH Edinburg, Texas Jan 4 (UP)
Discovery of suicide notes in the pockets of a dead man who, when alive, did not know how to read or write, caused the detention here today of seven persons as figures in a murder plot [on the last of December, 1931].
The victim was Higinio Mendiola, 46, an assistant Southern Pacific section foreman. His lifeless body was found hanging near his home lat week. Authorities at first believed his death suicide.
Later Justice R D Combs learned Mendiola was illerate, had an insurance policy payable regardless of the cause of death, and had been having domestic trouble. Authorities said one of the detained persons made a statement implimenting the others."
Associated Press on p 2 of the same paper further stated that Mendiola was found suspended far out on a small branch of a mesquite tree. He was tied by a small rope. Officers suspected from the condition of his body he had not committed suicide...JPCombs, who conducted an inquest, declared the death had resulted from strangulation or sphyxiation.
