I have read quite a few pages someone posted on the internet about Minerva J Gowen. After reading these notes, it appears to me that we may have two Minerva/Manerva Gowen/Going intertwined. The one I am trying to search is the step-daughter of Joseph W Dabbs and daughter of Mary D Ham Menees Dabbs. She is in their household in the 1850 Davidson Co TN Census as Minvera Menees.(Census shows his name as JoW Dabbs)She is also enumerated in the 1860 Sardis Post Office, Panola Co Mississippi Census with her mother and step-father Joseph Dabbs as Minerva Going. He is listed as J W Dabbs in that Census.
Her birthday shows to be between September 18, 1835 and October 2, 1835 as calculated by the dates of these two census records. My great-grandfather was her step-1st cousin his wife her first cousin! He lived in the household with his Uncle Joseph W Dabbs family as an orphan along with his sister, Ann Dabbs. He met his wife through this union of his Uncle Joseph and Mary Ham Meenes.Mary Ham was the aunt of Louisa F Ham who is my great-grandmother.
It still may well be the one and same Minerva. But I have also found a Minerva Gowen age 37 enumerated with Dr Robert Foster and wife Julia W in the 1870 Davidson Co, Nashville, TN Census along with their six children and elderly lady, Sarah B Woods age 77(born in KY). Listed is also two women, W Sally Branch 26 and Theora W Branch 28 both born in TN.Have any ideas on this census? If this is one and the same Minerva Gowen then why is she enumerated with Dr Robert foster in 1870 when she would have at that date the name of Minerva Stephenson??
In the Davidson Co Deed book # 15, Pg 471 Joseph W Dabbs gives Minerva 20 acres of land at Mill Creek on Feb 5, 1852.Joseph acquired land there when he married Mary D Ham Menees, from Samuel Ham, father to Mary, who lived on Mill Creek also. So, I am thinking that he gave her some of the land that was originally her Grandfather Samuel Ham when she married John H Gowen January 13, 1852.She is then listed in the 1860 Mississippi Census back with her mother and step-father.So John died between 1852 and 1860!!!
Just as a side note, I have found a Mary A M Dabbs marrying Charles L Annis May 17, 1866 in Davidson Co, TN. Joseph W Dabbs died in Delhi, Louisiana, May 4, 1865.So the dates would work, but I do not have Mary's initials anywhere as 'A'.On the 1850 Census it shows 'D'.The 'M' in this marriage record could be for Menees. What do you think?Do we have another marriage for Mary Ham?I have not had the time to look into that!!!But I am on my way! lol
