Joseph Merita and Maragaretha Zimler gave birth to a daughter, Johanna, circa 1840, probably in northwestern Bohemia or Austria.Johanna Merita married Emanuel Lorenz and gave birth to Joseph A. Lorenz on June 24, 1861.
Emanuel Lorenz died at a young age (probably in the late 1860s), and Johanna Lorenz nee Merita and her son, Joseph A. Lorenz, emigrated to the U.S. circa 1870 and settled in Ozaukee County just north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Joseph’s mother may have emigrated first with Joseph following about a year later at the age of 9. He was Roman Catholic.
One uncle of Joseph A. Lorenz was Wenzel Bernhardt.Wenzel Bernhardt was born in HARTENBERG, BOHEMIA, in 1809 or 1810.He married Margaretha Lorenz and emigrated to the U.S. circa 1845.According to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Margaretha Lorenz was also born (March 07, 1817) in Bohemia. Margaretha’s nephew was Joseph A. Lorenz, as noted in her will, and it is likely his parents lived in the same general area as Margaretha Lorenz and Wenzel Bernhardt.
