Greetings, all! It is known that Melinda Merwin was born in Canada, Vermont,Connecticut, or New York 26 Jan 1795 and died in Bolton, Quebec in 1896. Both dates are from her tombstone in the Duboyce cemetery in Bolton, Quebec. She married Isaac Hilliker in St. Armand, Quebec in 1809 and the couple resided in Quebec for the rest of their lives.
It has been argued (very informally and without any sources) that my Melinda was the daughter of "James Merwin of Reading, Mass." This assertion was made by Walter Beattie of the Bolton, Quebec Historical Society. After spending many hours on the Net, speaking with various individuals in Reading, Mass., etc, I have determined that there never was such a person as James Merwin of Reading, Mass. There were no Merwins (to my knowledge) who lived in that part of Massachusetts!
Therefore, a New York or Connecticut connection seems far more plausible. There was a James Merwin living in New York in 1790 (though I have not found more about him). There were many Merwins in Connecticut, naturally. Possible parents for Melinda Merwin are John and Margaret (Fitzsimmons) Merwin who were married in Schodack, Renssalaer, NY in 1791.
Another possibility comes from the line of Epaphras Merwin who married Hannah Adair. They had a son James Adair Merwin who was born about 1770. I have been unable to find more on him.
In short, I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone can give me to establish Melinda's parentage.
Given the fact that I have an exact birth date for my Melinda, it should only be a process of elimination to find her parents. She was approximately 14 years of age when she married Isaac Hilliker, so it stands to reason that her parents were living near St. Armand, Quebec in 1809.
Thank you in advance for any assistance or leads you can give me!
