Mathias P. “Matt” Metz was born February 11, 1923, to Peter and Frances Metz in Adrian, Minnesota. He moved to Hadley, Minnesota with his family in 1935, and graduated from Slayton High School in 1940. Matt enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in October of 1942 and was stationed in Italy as a flight engineer on a B-24 bomber. On February 13, 1945, German anti-aircraft guns fired shots at his plane and he was forced to parachute into enemy territory. He was captured and remained a Prisoner of War until the war's end in 1945. Upon returning to Minnesota, he farmed with his father for a few years before enrolling in South Dakota College where he graduated in 1950. He taught Veteran's Agriculture in Lake Wilson, Minnesota and Slayton, Minnesota until accepting the position as Extension Agent for Wabasha County in 1953. He remained in that position until his first retirement in 1984. For the next 15 years Matt served in several positions as District Supervisor of Extension for Southeastern Minnesota, Administrator of the Farm Crisis Mediator program for the University of Minnesota and in marketing for the First National Bank of Plainview, Minnesota. Matt retired from the bank in 1999. Matt was active in many county and community affairs during his years in Wabasha. He served on both the St. Felix and Wabasha School Boards; he was a member and past Commander of the Wabasha American Legion Post 50. He served on the Wabasha County Fair Board and was involved in many other activities and events. Matt married Donna Loosbrock on May 3, 1952, in Currie, Minnesota. They raised their four children in Wabasha, Minnesota. Matt was devoted to his family and enjoyed many interests such as golf, fishing and baseball.
“Matt” Metz died peacefully Monday, November 13, 2006, at Highland Chateau Health Care Center in St. Paul, Minnesota surrounded by his loving family.
Matt is survived by his children: Mary Kay Metz, St. Paul, MN; David (Sue) Metz, Richfield, MN; Paul (Joni) Metz, New Brighton, MN; Sarah (Gary) Gwaltney, Inver Grove Heights, MN; his grandchildren: Kari, Jennifer and Kelsey Metz; Andrew and Marie Metz; Alexander and Anna Gwaltney. He is also survived by three brothers: Wilfred, Windom, MN; Ray, Slayton, MN; and Joseph, Fairmont, MN and five sisters: Mary Ann Conway, Marcella Vos and Jane Wagner all of Slayton, MN; Irene Stevens, Golden Valley, MN; and Dorothy Randall, St. Cloud, MN. His wife Donna who died May 10, 2004; his parents; and brothers: Ervin, Walter and Albert Metz, preceded him in death.
A funeral Mass was be offered on Thursday, November 16, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha with the Reverend William Kolas officiating. Interment is in St. Felix Cemetery.
