This exchange is getting too exciting to ignore. My JAMES J. (or K.) GARLAND, born c. 22 December 1844 in Sherburne, Chenango County, NY (per death certificate), enlisted for the Civil War from Middlefield, NY, and served in the NY 121st. When he returned he m. Miranda (or Marinda) Johnson, d/o Edwin Johnson and Betsy Huggins, at Paris, Oneida Co., NY, 8 July 1867. Their children were Edwin James Garland (m. Emma Verby Harrison), Cary Garland (m. Arthur Ferriss), Eva Garland (m. Geo. Whalen), Arthur J. Garland (m. Helen Jewett), and Ella Garland (died young). He was a Seventh Day Adventist who lived in Utica and Buffalo and d. 3 Sept. 1914 at Buffalo, NY. Death certificate gave his parents as James Garland and Eliza "Neeves," possibly an erroneous version of "Mevis." Note that the Sherburne, NY, Garlands had relatives in Middlefield, NY. I have been trying to figure out James Garland's true origins for twenty years. We may all be cousins here--let's stay in touch!
