I am tracing back my mothers Michael line and come to a full stop at John Michael (b. 1802 - d. 1882).His son John Michael (b. 1837) married Jacob Micahel's (b.1808) daughter Louisa Jane Michael (b.1847).I am from that line.
I am looking for John and Jacob's ancestry. They may have been first or second cousins, brothers, or shared by coincidence the same surname.
Both John and Jacob show up in the Census in Hampshire County in 1860, 1870 and 1880.They are on the same page and listed as consecutive families (not sure if that means they were neighbors or not.)
Looking at Hampshire Co. Property Tax (1782-1799) records and Census, the first Michael who shows up is George in 1782 census, and in the tax records from 1782 to 1790.There is a John who shows up briefly in 1794.Frederick shows up from 1791 to 1799. I also found property transfers (144 acres in Hampshire Co.) to George and Jacob from the Christopher O'Haver family in 1797. Sims Index lists Frederick with 100 acres of the Great Capon area in 1802.The 1815 Directory of VA Landowners lists Elizabeth, Frederick, and George as owners in the Great Capon area of Hampshire Co.I think these are main Michael threads in Hampshire CO, WV.
For Hampshire County, WV --- In the 1810 US Census, Elizabeth, Frederick, George, Henry and Phillip Michael show up as heads of families.
In the 1820 US Census, Frederick, George, Henry, John, and Phillip show up as heads of families.
In the 1830 US Census, Daniel, Elizabeth, Frederick, George, Phillip, and Sarah show up as heads of families.
In the 1840 US Census, Daniel, Frederick, George, John, Mary, and Phillip show up as heads of families.
In the 1850 US Census, Daniel, Frederick, Jacob, John, Mary and Phillip show up as heads of families.
I have seen reference to Johannes Frederick Michael (d.1792) having six sons: John, Frederick, George, Christian, Jacob, and William, but I have not been able to definitively link them to either John (b.1802) or Jacob (b.1808).I have also read that Daniel (b.1804) may be John's brother, but I don't have any linkage there either.I have also seen a John Michael (d.1841 Indiana), but I can't definitively link him either to my John or to Johannes Frederick
Can anyone help me put this puzzle together?Has anybody already identified the Hampshire Michael family lines? Ideally, I am trying to understand the relationships and the parents of John and Jacob.
