Actually, it was not added but removed.See, in Mexico and Spain, it is customary for children to take their father's and mother's last name.Luis Maria de Miera Villa married Isabel Ana Pacheco.Their childern were Benardo, Maria Antonia and Jasinta Mauela Antonia.The children's last name was therefore Miera y Pacheco.Bernardo married Maria Estefana Dominguez de Mendoza.So, thier children should be Miera y Mendoza.But, that's when the tradition of using both names stopped.So their children were just Miera.Does that make any sense?
The same would apply to Duran y Chavez.
In fact, this is still done today in Mexico, Central America and Spain.
If we still did this today, I would be Jude Ulibarri y Guiterrez.
