Please help me with my brick wall. “The History of Montville” (Connecticut) by Henry Baker is pretty vague on this family.
Alpheus CHAPMAN, b. abt. 1743, d. January 2, 1824 Montville, the son of Joseph CHAPMAN b. December 10, 1722 in New London and Mary PERKINS, born Montville, m. Martha HOLMES, b. abt. 1735, d. January 22, 1794 Montville (anyone know her parentage?)
They had three children according to Baker:
Alpheus m. March 2, 1797 in New London, Elizabeth ALLEN, b. abt. 1737, d. November 23, 1806 (her parentage?)
Jason (sometimes referred to as Jesse?) m. Hannah HOLMES, daughter of Jabez HOLMES and Lydia HARRIS.
Infant daughter b. & d. 1774
The above all works out pretty well. But the next generation, according to Baker, falls apart. Jason’s supposed daughter, Mary CHAPMAN was born December 25, 1764. This date has been verified.
Here is what Baker wrote (A History of Montville, Conn, pages 533-536)
... James BABCOCK, Alpheus BABCOCK, Thomas BABCOCK, and Mary BABCOCK, Henry MINARD, Sophia MINARD, Emiline MINARD, and Ann BIRD were heirs at law of the estate of Alpheus CHAPMAN. He was born about 1750 and was living in 1812. His wife's name was Martha _____, and was one of the witnesses to the last will of Samuel HOLMES, August 4, 1774. He had sons Alpheus, who married Elizabeth ALLEN; Jesse married Hannah HOLMES, daughter of Jabez, and his children were Jesse, Mary, married Nehemiah FARGO.”
Alpheus (not sure which at this point, father or son) married also Mary BILL, widow of Richard DAYTON.
Can anyone clear up my confusion? I welcome information on any of the above named persons so I can figure it all out properly.
