George Henry Minchew was my Grandfather , I am George Henry Minchew, II , son of Barron Clifford Minchew & Effie Saline Bass Minchew, born in 1952 in Lufkin, Texas. My Father Barron died at the VA Hospital in Houston, Texas in May of 1960. I am the oldest of theri four children.I have a brother, Bob Minchew and two sisters: Janice Minchew Wilson and Barbara Minchew Loud.
When my Father passed away, we were living in Lufkin, Texas and were sent by the County Welfare people to live at the Methodist Childrens Home in Waco, Texas in February of 1964.My mother Effie became a ward of the State of Texas and lived at the Austin State School as well as the Travis State School. She is still alive and lives near me here in Austin at a group home run by a former employee of the Austin State School.
My Aunt, Opal Kamke came to Waco in 1970 and offered to have us come to California to live with her.We declined, because Janice and I were almost finished with High School at that time. I never saw her after that visit.I gave her the American Flag that was draped over my Dad's casket at his funeral.
I met Aunt Audrey and Uncle Jake Minchew in 1981.They visited with me at my home in Georgetown, Texas and then went on to Arkansas to see other Family.
My family visited them (Aunt Audrey and uncle Jake) in Porterville in 1992 on a trip to California and I met some of the cousins on that visit.
Aunt Audrey Minchew told me that Melvin had died of cancer and Owen had disappeared (into thin air apparently) on his way to Army boot camp! (Now there is a mystery waiting to be solved!)
Please contact me via email as I would like to know more about my family history. As you can imagine, I don't know much since my brother and sisters grew up in the Methodist Home.I can fill you in on as much as I know.
