THE OLDEST MINTER IMMIGRANTS
New research may finally show who the oldest Minter immigrants were, and that they may now be tentatively connected to John Minter (d. 1743)
I, John B. Minter, in conjunction with Gail Minter Bynum have been working on determining who were the first MINTER immigrants into the American Colonies, and their connection to John Minter (d. 1743) of Essex County, VA.Gail did the vast majority of the still ongoing research, while I did furnish some new material and put it all together into a standard tree format.We feel that the information presented is as factual as we can determine from the listed sources, and have tried to present it in a way that is reasonable and understandable.We welcome any and all, constructive, critical comments that will lead to the final proof of our ancestors.In the interest of saving space here, we refer you to the complete family tree which is presented on the Richard (Mintrene) Minter Rootsweb World connect at this link:
We now have both ends of the chain of ancestors, and are only missing full proof of one person in order to complete the chain (John ? Minter b. 1650) and his exact relationship to John (d. 1743).
1.Richard Mintrene 1stGeneration
Richard Mintrene and son Edward came to Virginia in 1620.Their names are on the muster rolls for Elizabeth City in 1624/25:

William Beane aged 25 in the "Diana", 1618
Edward Mintrene aged 12 in the "Margaret and John", 1620
John Inman aged 26 in the "Falcon", 1619
William Brown aged 14 in the "Southampton", 1622
Provisions: corne, 12 barrels;
armes: Peeces 8, sword 1, Armors 2;
lead 100 lb.
*From Richard's age, 40 years, at arrival date, we can imply a birth year of 1580.
2.John Minter, b. 1619.2nd Generation
Although there is no absolute proof for determining the lineage for this JOHN MINTER and that he is the son of John (Mintrene) Minter the immigrant, we think that a strong case for father/son can be made.
When George Cabell Greer researched the early immigrants, who came to Virginia between 1623-1666, the only Minters that he found in over 20,000 immigrants were Edward and John Minter. In his book Early Virginia Immigrants, published in 1912 and reprinted in 1960 by the Genealogical Publishing Co. was the following information on the immigrant: Name, date, and who was responsible for bringing them over. Under Edward Minter was:
Grace Minter, 1636, by Edward Minter
Jon Minter, 1635, by Edward Minter
According to Greer, a Jon Minter was brought over by Edward Minter in 1635. A check of the ships and passenger lists for 1635 netted only one John Minter. So since there wasn't any other John Minter he must have been the one Edward brought over and William Barker received a headright for in 1635.
Thus we know that there is a second generation son named John Minter.A more complete proof is found on World Connect.
3.John ? Minter, b. 1650.3rd Generation.
Actually this son named JOHN is tentative but logically inferred from the information below.Since we know there was a son FNU, the name of JOHN will suffice for our purposes of identification until we get other better information.
Notice the trend that each of the subsequent first born males in this family are named "John" as it was fairly standard at that time to name that child after the father.

At the time of John's death, only two children were mentioned.P. 131 of the above records, "The Court Hath bound Mary, the orphan of John Minter decd. unto Ralph Poole to serve him until she be fifteen years of age and order that said Poole do give good caution to educate and maintaine her during that time, and deliver her estate with clothing and other necessaries according to law at the expiration of sd time".

p. 6"A cow to be recorded to John Minter's sonne named Gentle and her increase by my own free consent and desire.Test. Charles Sparrowe rec. July 11, 1655.The mark of Elizabeth Minter X"
[I suggest that the writer did not use the name of the son because the child was a junior. If he had a different name, it should have been given. When the writer referred to the daughter of John Minter he wrote her name Mary. So why wouldn't the same thing happen with the "sonne" of John Minter?]
4.John Minter d. 1743.4th Generation.
There is no definitive proof at this time that this John Minter d. 1743 is connected to the ancestors shown above and is only presented as a calculated speculation to further the research into the immigrant MINTER Families.However, the Sherer Family Bible notations do make a reasonable but not positive connection.Additionally, there were a very limited number of MINTER families in Virginia at that time and the generational time lines are reasonable as well.
John's birth year is estimated.
This John Minter is very well documented in Virginia historical papers and needs no verification except for his ancestral connections.Hopefully this message will bring to light new information to verify and complete this family tree
5.Our Minter family line goes back to 1635 and Wales, and it was stated thus in the Minter Bible that was sold at the estate sale of John Minter's (b. 1769) and later noted in the Shearer Genealogy.
(York County, SC Estate Records, Case 7, File 281)"William Shearer, bought the [Minter] Bible, no doubt for his wife Martha, one of Minter's daughters."
