Sue,
Thank you so much for the new information.Oddly, I found that same article just last week!Did you notice the Axson family on it?I wonder if that is where Minton got the name for his son, Axson.Any relation that you have found?I am surprised I have never noticed their name before.
Lately, I have been reading Thomas Jordan's documents in the Texas archives that are available online.Their resources are great for not being in Texas!I was finally able to see John Minton's property in Ellis County.I know that you and I talked about part of Santa Ana's gun that belongs to a descendant of T. Jordan. You mentioned something about forgery on the documents for transferring the property to Jordan. Was that the transferring of power of attorney in Texas to Jordan in 1870 and 1871?I would love to know the evidence, because if it weren't for you mentioning that, I would never have known about it!I found one letter that describes how John Minton looked.I loved it!I wish we had a painting or a photograph.Who knows, I might have one and not even know it!The family was never good at labeling pictures.
I also read about his service in the 1st Seminole War and his participation in the court martial trial of the two British spies at St. Marks, Florida.I had learned about it seven years ago according to my notes, but thanks to google books, I have found the actual records in Congress, published in 1855.
I did read in The History of the Georgia Militia (I have the citation if you would like it) that following his service in 1818 in Florida, he went to Darien to be a merchant in the firm Minton & Mitchell.I have no way of knowing if the "Minton" in Minton & Mitchell is John, his father, or some other relative. However, I did find an Alexander Mitchell in Darien in 1850.He is the only Mitchell apart from him wife, and the census lists him as a "merchant."
I am still on the hunt for the Savannah [Daily] Republican obituary that Francis Goulding wrote in March 1871.I have found it cited three times, but I have yet to find an archives that has it.I took another look at the obituary I sent you for Rosina. It ends with F.R.G.--Francis Robert Goulding?
Anyway, thank you for sending the information!
