Hello, I am part of a group working to get an historical designation for the Cardwell-Misenheimer Cemetery in Caldwell Co. TX.Part of our job is to learn something about the people buried in that cemetery. Here's some Misenheimer info I have come across.Maybe it will help some of you.
Daniel Monroe Misenheimer, born 9 June 1828 NC, died 9 Apr 1888, Caldwell County, TX.Md. Martha Lelia Brown [Ellison] 14 July 1872.(Caldwell County Cemetery Records & Caldwell County Marriage Records)Martha Lelia's first husband was Tom Ellison, who died young.
Daniel & Martha had two sons, John H. and Daniel, and three daughters, Annie md. C. E. Mohle; Stella, md. Dick Jolley; Martha md. W. Sherwood Bunch. The son, Dan, was born 27 Aug 1883, and died 5 Sept 1883, and is bd. in C-M Cemetery, as is his sister, Annie, who died in childbirth at the age of 20 years. The child survived.
The story is that the Misenheimers came to Texas shortly after the Civil War, but I believe they came prior to the war.A Daniel Misenheimer served the Confederacy from NC, but he had the middle initial "J".Daniel Misenheimer served in Company A, 36th Texas Infantry.(Confederate Muster Rolls) He is also listed on the Caldwell County TX Confederate Soldiers list.
Also, page 240 of Historical Caldwell County, Where Roots Intertwine:Brownsboro located between Lockhart and Luling, was founded by the Brown family. It lists several families who came to TX after the Mexican War, in about 1837, and then states that a few years later, some others came. The list includes some Ellisons.A few years later, more setlers came, among them Tyre Brown, Bob Brown, Gus Ellison, Bill Ellison, Stokes, Michenheimer, and John Michenheimer.
Elizabeth Stokes was Daniel M.'s mother.Tyre Brown was Lelia's father.Tom Ellison was Lelia's first husband.
Daniel's brothers were John and K.S.The Caldwell County Cemetery Records lists K.S. Misenhamer md. Ms. M. E. Snow, 3 August 1865. Champion Cowan, Chief Justice performed the ceremony.Since the War was not over until 1865, and virtually no travel was done during the War, this seems to lend credence to the fact that the Misenheimers came to Texas prior to the Civil War.
Daniel Monroe & Martha Lelia bought property near the C-M cemetery, and may have had a baby that was the first person buried in this cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1855, and was originally known as Plum Creek Cemetery.Next door was a school/meeting house called Plum Creek Academy.
Cardwell is my interest in the cemetery. It is in deplorable condition, and a group of us are working to get it cleaned up and provide a means to keep it clean.
If anyone has anything to add to this that may be helpful in putting some flesh back on these oldtimers, feel free to send it along. Otherwise, I hope this helps someone.
