I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of an elderly woman taken by Robinson, Nantucket, MA.It is identified on the back of the mount in period ink handwriting:
"our Beloved Mother Eliza W Mitchell Feby 22nd 1808 Feby 23d 1896"
A duplicate print is held by the Nantucket Historical Association in its Research Library & Archives.
Born 22 Feb 1808 in MA, died 23 Feb 1896 in MA, some Public Member Trees record Eliza's maiden name as Plaskett.The "Massachusetts Marriages, 1633-1850" database includes a record of a marriage on 25 Apr 1824 in Nantucket between Timothy G. Clapp and Eliza H. [sic] Plasket.Timothy was born 12 Feb 1800 and died 14 Jan 1842 in North Aurora, CT.The couple had three children: Joseph W. Clapp (1825-), Henry P. Clapp (1836-), and Walter A. (or N.) Clapp (1839-).Eliza married a second time, to a blacksmith, David Mitchell, born about 1799 in RI, died 1875.Eliza was David's fourth wife.David had at least one child, Edward H. Mitchell (1842-).
Eliza was a lifetime resident of Nantucket.She is listed in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census data for Nantucket, Nantucket Co., MA (the 1880 enumerator recorded her residence as located on Center Street).
