Laura, your message caught my eye because my second great grandfather William Mitchell's middle name was Craghead (for reasons I've never ascertained), and although he was born in Monroe Co., (West) Virginia in 1824, his father Elisha Mitchell was born in Henry County, married his first wife Judith Wills in neighboring Pittsylvania County, and returned to that area in later life. Elisha was born c. 1783 toRichard and Elizabeth (Morgan) Mitchell. I've got three othersons for them, Coleman, Archibald and James, no Thomas, but Thomas has been a recurring name in my Mitchell family line and it's possible that there was a younger son I've not yet found a trace of. (All 4 of Richard's sons that I know of were born by 1784. There were also two girls, Susanna and Sarah, born in 1787 and 1794, respectively, so another son in 1797 is not implausible (mother Elizabeth Morgan was born c. 1767).If my Mitchells are not in your direct family line, the Craghead name might at least offer some kind of clue. Hope this helps!
