Hello, I am looking for information on my GGG Grandfather William Abraham Moats probably born circa 1780-90. Attached is more information. Sincerely, Clayton Will Badger, Iowa I have heard this story all my life about GG Grandfather William Abraham Moats II, 1811-1862 being killed by indians and have it in my grandmothers writing in family records but was never sure what happened. Doing a Google search I discovered William Moats as one of those killed in a UC California reprint of The Works of Mark Twain, Early Tales & Sketches Vol. 11851-1864, PP. 389-91. The informant referred to in Twains account was my GG Grandmother (Iams) Moats brother only known by last name Iams did return to Webster City Iowa area with others to tell the story. Twain said he was from Story County which is close to Webster City. What validation for me as the stories mirror each other in so many ways. Having not known the location before and the account by Iams of it being near the raft river gives me good location.
Following are my Grandmother May Moats hand written recollections. She was of Webster City, Iowa. "William Moats was killed by Indians going to 1850's gold rush on way to California. "Grandpa William Moats went with a party to get money in the gold rush to Calif & the Indians were trying to get their food and grandpa Moats wrote a letter to his wife Catherine and said"Dear Wife Don't know when , but we'll be home after while," but he never got home. Cathern Iams brother returned to Webster city after the attack she said, the last he saw of him he was full of arrows fighting to save their food. (William had hired on to drive the supply wagon) So supposed killed by Indians."
