I have found my Middleton was was hung for treason ...1781 British General Cornwallis marched from Wilmington through old Duplin Co. to Yorktown. Middleton and Biggers were leaders of the Tories in the area.... they were pursued by a Colonel Kenan they retreated to Wilmington and joined the Britishtroops under General Craig. The battle of Portevent's Mill followed. By the end of that summer the tories were surrendering.. Middleton was from the Sampson area and was obliged to leave the county. He was afterwards taken in Martin Co., brought back to Wilmington, tried , condemned , and executed. His brother Biggers remained in the Co. of Sampson. One account says he was cut down by his wife, revived and rehung.
