We have a very strange puzzle in our family:
My mother is the only child of a late-in-life, Northern, second marriage for
my Southern-born grandfather, Ashton Michael CARROLL b. 1883; he died when
she was only 13 and, previous to his passing, he'd "dispensed with" his
former life in New Orleans, LA by burning most of his papers after moving to
Cincinnati, OH, where my family is centered.
Years ago, we'd heard from the last child of the first marriage a strange
tale of our CARROLLs not really being CARROLLs, but MOCLAIRS or MONTCLERCs or MONTCLERQUES. This relative told us he'd gone to Ireland to trace the family, but had discovered this odd anomaly about our supposedly Irish name really being a French family instead, yet we did not quite get the full
story down pat in our memories before he died.
He also had said something about a "Duke" de MONTCLERC, from France (OR Spain?), who'd served as a soldier in the Vatican Army during the Crusades
or something and there was, in addition, some mention of Haiti & a Lucienne
DE LA TASTE being involved somehow. Of course, this was an absolutely WILD
story, even if we hadn't "remembered" several separate versions of it!
Just recently, I've corresponded with a gentleman who has confirmed most of
our recollections independently, but he restated the story as descendants of
a Guillame de MONTCLAIR having left France for Ireland in or before the 10th
century. According to him, they had settled in Grangemoakler, Tipperary, Ireland. He also said that the Norman French called the region near Clonmell in Tipperary the "Grange de Montclair/Mauclerq".
"The DEMONTCLAIR/MAUCLERQ name, now MOAKLER/MOCKLER in Ireland, still has a French ring. The Irish pronounce the name 'MAW-CLAIR' but it is spelled MOCLAIR. Most of the Irish MOCLAIRs in Clonmell are supposedly descendants from this French nobleman, Guillame de MONTCLAIR," he said he'd been told.
My mom has, ever since, been eager only to discover what was the real story
behind her father's interesting background. When she contacted a first
cousin in Louisiana whom she'd met as a child, he sent her an old genealogy,
but said he couldn't remember what the story about the MOCLAIR name was -
except something about their grandfather having used the name in a hyphenated sort of way, & it having been discarded sometime in the 1920s. All the children, including my grandfather, were listed in the Family Bible as "CARROLL MOCLAIRs".
Since getting on the Internet three years ago, my brother, Mike,& I have been trying to pin down what was what in all this. When I discovered a Michael MOCLER CARROLL's obituary in an 1890s edition of the New Orleans
Times-Picayune, I knew instinctively that this must be my great-great-grandfather. It said he'd emigrated from Ireland to the USA, and had been born ca. 1832-4 in Galway County, Ireland.
I've been slowly inching my way forward with this, and had just recently discovered how many MOCLAIRs & MOCKLERs & MOAKLERs were from Galway, Ireland, even though I'd first found that it was a pretty unusual name today here in the States - apparently maybe only one family in New York and another in Florida.
I also, a few months ago, found a census record for Michael that said his wife had been a Mary Cecelia BORGE from Key West. We've been, ever since, tossing around crazy theories of our ancestry - anything that would tie all our knowledge, & the reticence of our Southern connections, together. Frankly, when we discovered Michael's WIFE's maiden name, I just made the next leap & assumed Michael's MOTHER, rather than his wife, must've been a MOCLAIR (or MOCLER or whatever) Could her place of origin lead to the Haiti connection or what?
I've been thinking that probably all these various spellings of the name in question, as well as possibly two different branches from Tipperary & Galway, Ireland, must come from one French Norman family; I would LOVE to know further history on the original bearer of the name, for he could turn out to be the "Duke" of this tale handed down in my family, and maybe he was even the one who experienced some of the other details in my story, at some point way back in the 10th century...
Have you ever heard of any of this? I'd surely love to hear from you! In the following descendant outline, the parenthesized numbers indicate the generations. Sorry ifGenforum doesn't indent!
