I have the following info on the line of Moffats (my tree) that came to Canada: Charles Moffat (m) Jean (or Jane) Bowhill (1768-1841) married 6July1786, Berwick County Scotland
both buried St.Michael's Parish Church in Gordon descendants currently living in Earlston, Scotland
son of Charles and Jean = Henry Purvis Moffat (William may be another son)
Henry Purvis, 1806 (Edinburgh) - 1878 Edgehill, Ont. Margaret Young 1811 (Edinburgh) - 1886 ( Dublin)
Children John, Thomas, Charles, George, Henry, Robert, Janet, Jean Ann (or Jeannie)
I have quite a bit of info on these children, dates, and where they branched out.
Charles is my g-g grandfather.Henry was a stock feeder in Edinburgh (cowfeeder N0.2a).Most of the family were involved in sea shipping, publishing, or cabinetry.Several were career sailors. Also have info on that and who the girls married but too much to type.
Charles (cabinet maker 1831-1909) married Christina Steele (an author) and emmigrated to New York, then back to Edinburgh, then to Quebec and onto Guelph Ontario, then to Durham Ontario where they rented a small house not far from me (I am in Durham). They built a second story onto the house and it is still standing and lived in.
They purchased a farm at Edgehill, Conc 2, Glenelg Twp, Grey County, Ontario, and built a lovely two story stone house with elaborate woodwork, gabezo etc.(the first in the area with indoor plumbing).Charles and descendants were involved in local politics and churches with several "movers and shakers" as were Henry and Margaret's children.
One of their sons, John Young Moffat (1855-1929) had a son named Charles Henry (farmer, cabinetmaker).John and Charles sold the family farm after Charles' first 2 wives died, leaving him with 2 young daughters. They moved into the town of Durham, Ontario after building a house on land purchased from Anna Moffat (John's sister) next to Anna's house.Charles married for a 3rd time to Ida Maria Davis and they had a son Charles Davis Moffat, my father.I purchased the house from my Dad, making me and my kids generations 4 and 5 of Moffats living here.(lumber to build the house hauled into town from the farm prior to selling)
Hope the info on Charles Moffat and Jean Bowhill is helpful.
