Hon. John MOFFAT who m. Catherine CUTT[s] - Kittery, Maine 1723
Can anyone please tell me more about the "Hon." John MOFFAT who married Catherine CUTTS on Aug. 20, 1723 prob. in Kittery, York Co., Maine?
Stackpole's book on Old Kittery and Her Families gives him the title of "Honorable", which would seem to indicate he had some status about town, yet I am finding very little about this man.
His wife Catherine CUTTS was b. Sept. 30, 1700 in Kittery and she was a daughter of Robert CUTTS and Dorcas HAMMOND.
John and Catherine's daughter Catherine MOFFAT b.c1734 married William WHIPPLE, Jr. who was the signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was a resident of Portsmouth, NH and was a merchant there. He has also been referred to as Gen. Wm. Whipple. His Mother was Mary CUTTS who was also a daughter of Robert Cutts and Dorcas Hammond. So his Mother and his Mother-in-law were Sisters...or his Mother-in-law was also his Aunt.
The Cutts name it is thought was orig. spelled CUTT but somehow the 's' was added later.
Info from the above mentioned book.
If anyone has further info about Catherine MOFFAT's Parents, I would be most greatful as it would help me to fill in more blanks on my Family Tree.I believe the Moffat's were Scottish.Did John or his father come to this country as a Scot POW perhaps? Many of the Scot POW families did end up in Kittery is the reason I'm asking and many of their descending families became quite prominent.
Thank You for any help.
