Hi, can anybody tell me any information about why there are so many Moffats/Moffatts near Ballina in Co.Mayo in the West of Ireland?
My great grandfather was a Moffatt from Ballina, and a Catholic. I know there are plenty of Moffats in Nothern Ireland, but they are usually Protestant. I believe the Moffats in Mayo are pretty much all Catholic. Does anybody know why or when people with the surname Moffatt/Moffett/Moffat arrived in Mayo from Scotland?
My family asked this question to the head of the Moffat clan in Scotland about 20 years ago, but he didn't know the answer either. Any thoughts on the subject much appreciated, thanks!
