SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF (Obit) Taken from: The "American Friend" newspaper, Marietta, Washington Co., OH (Pg. 3, Col. 3), dated 16 July 1819:
"DIED, at Lawrenceville, on the 8th inst. after a distressing illness of three days which she bore with Christian fortitude, Mrs. SOPHIA HOFF, age 70 years."
She was the daughter of the Rev. WILLIAM MOFFETT. Her mother and any siblings, if any, are presently unknown. It isn't known (to me) exactly where she was born, but it was in the year 1749, and it seems likely to have been in either Prince William Co., VA (where she was later married ~1772 to her husband), or perhaps in NJ, where her father may have known the Hoffs, and like them, he, too, at some point made the treck south to rural Virginia near Manassas. Like SUSAN's to be husband, DANIEL HOFF, her father was also reportedly a "lay" preacher/minister and doubtlessly he came into contact at some point with the "Rev." DANIEL HOFF. After the death of his first wife, LAURA TITUS, DANIEL quickly remarried SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT. Firm documentation shows he had married LAURA TITUS on 15 Sep 1769 in Hunterdon Co., NJ. However, she presumably died before 1772, in that DANIEL and SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF's first son, ENOCH HOFF was reportedly born in 1773. However, DANIEL and LAURA's last son (of the three sons they had before her death) was an AMOS HOFF, was reportedly born in 1775 (per his headstone in the Dallas Co. Cem. where POWELL & MARTHA BREWSTER HOFF are buried). So, there appears to have been some confusing "overlapping" of dates. The exact date of LAURA TITUS HOFF's death and burial location has not been established or documented, but may be in one of the mysterious 15 unmarked graves documented on the 186 acre farm of MOORE HOFF, who is believed to have had some family connection with the Rev. DANIEL HOFF, and DANIEL's father, JOHN HOFF (~1720 NJ - Aft. 1793).
At any rate, although no recording of the exact date of the remarriage of DANIEL HOFF to SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF has been yet found or documented, it is believed to have been around 1772, when SUSAN would have been age 23, in or near Manassas, Prince William Co. VA. This is purely because their first son, ENOCH HOFF was reportedly born in 1773, when she was age 24.
Since the move from NJ to VA, the Rev. DANIEL HOFF may have lived and working on the farm of MOORE HOFF, 2 mi SW of Manassas. Their names appear one-after-the-other on a Personal Property Tax Roll for 1790-1800. Then, following their marriage and the birth of their 8 children, DANIEL died in 1802, when SUSAN would have been age 53. Three years later, in 1805, at then age 56, she pulled up stakes and made the treck with the rest of her extended family, presumaably overland via waggon west down "Braddock's Road" (today's U.S. Hwy 40), and then via "flat boat" down either the Monongahela and/or the Ohio River past Pittsburgh and on to Washington Co., OH. She either bought land for herself, or she may have resided with the family of one of her daughters or son. However, in the 1810 Census of Newport Twp., she is recorded as "Head of Household" (living alone), indicating that she either rented or owned her own residence. The Newport Twp. 1810 Census data shows a close proximity of "John Dye" (her son-in-law), "John Dye, Jr." (her grandson), "Samuel Dye" (her other son-in-law), and several members of the "Hill" family, who are believed to come from Pr. William Co., VA and made the move with her. Her place of burial is unknown, but is believed to have been either in the Dye Cem. (at an unmarked site), or in the Mound Cem., Marietta, OH in an unknown grave site, (as a result of a wooden marker having rotted and now lost). A "Mrs. Hoff" is noted as being buried in the Mound Cemetery's records, but this could be either her grave, or that of her daughter-in-law, ELIZABETH DUNCAN HOFF(1780-1839), wife of her son JOHN F. HOFF, who died in Dec 1812 in Fearing Twp., Washington Co., OH.
The exact location of the residence of SUSAN SOPHIA MOFFETT HOFF in Newport Twp., Washington Co., OH is yet unknown to me, as are many of the other details of her life - beyond what I have noted above.
However, this newspaper obituary now firmly establishes the exact date of her death, previously assumed by others incorrectly to have been in 1818: It was properly 8 July, 1819. The Obit., noting her age at death being "age 70", also firmly establishes her birth year as being 1749, as well.
