A group of researchers has launched a DNA surname project focused on colonial Moff*tt lines of all spellings. We hope to establish the DNA pattern for as many immigrant Moff*tt ancestors as possible.
In order to accomplish this we need a broad base of participation, especially among Moffett men who can trace their ancestry back to one of the original colonies (or an early daughter state such as KY or TN).
At present we have results from a descendant of John Moffett-Mary Christian of Augusta Co., VA (through John's son William). We need to recruit a male who descends through one of John's other sons (Col. George or Robert) to verify the John Moffett DNA pattern.
We already have 4 participants whose DNA matches exactly; two trace their lineage directly to the William Moffitt who died in Randolph Co. NC in 1797 (son of Robert Moffitt-Mgt Stewart). The other two men now know they are related to the first two, but as of yet do not know how. And one spells his name Moffitt and one spells it Moffett!! Prior to this project none of the 4 knew they were related.
There are partial scholarships available to help build a base of test results, in particular for male descendants of the major Virginia/NC/SC Moffett families.
Please consider joining the project; there is much to be learned for all of us.Although only male descendants can participate, wives, cousins, sisters, etc. can steer their Moffett men in the right direction (as they always do).
