Good morning Clay,
Hmmmmmm. Well, I know of Mr. Peacock's work. He was a very industrious researcher for many years. I haven't visited with him for a couple of years, now. He had, at our last conversation, not been working on the family genealogy for some years, and his notes were boxed up and put away. If I remember correctly, he had also shared quite a bit of his data with Dr. James Oglesby of Kissimmee, Fla., another Moncrief Family member.
In my visits with Mssrs. Oglesby and Peacock, I did not get the impression either gentleman had determined John's origins. I am most intrigued by the possibility (that) the Isle of Wight reference may have come through Mr. Peacock. He is a very thorough researcher!
As to the "Virginia Company"... I believe you refer to one of two (the Virginia Company of Plymouth and the Virginia Company of London) English colonizing companies chartered by King James I in 1606 as the London Company, a corporation composed of stockholders residing in and about London. The Plymouth faction fell apart within three years, but the Virginia Company did manage to receive its' own individual charter and lasted until sometime in 1624 when the King had finally had all of them he could take! From 1612 to 1624 (under the conditions of their third charter) the Virginia Company was, as you suggest, a self-governing body. However, I don't think any of our boys are there that early.
I am more than happy to share the notes I have. May I email you? Meanwhile, here is a link to a page I had already posted on the web which you may find helpful. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.moncrief&m=109http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.moncrief&m=109It is the document which proves John did have a wife named Ann, but the transaction itself I find most interesting as it places the names of our John, Thorogood, Moseley, and Pallet (a very interesting lead!) together, as transactors in business if nothing else.
Another link to a transcription already posted... http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexechttp://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec? htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.moncrief&m=124
Among the signers of this document are our John, Moseley, Thorogood, and Lawson. The names of signers Woodhouse and Bray are also quite interesting, as they reappear later in our family's history when Moncriefs serve in the American Revolution under the command of men named Woodhouse and Bray. I have yet to try to trace these names back to see if there is a relationship, but it certainly is a most interesting possibility!
Ooops, got a little long-winded... well, I get excited. : P
Please let me know if I may email you directly, and I'll get you more stuff.
Regards,
John
