Ihave inherited information from my father, who did extensive searching to connect our family to Gottfried Mong of Washington/Frederick Co. Md.Gottfried married Maria Barbara Jearang in Trippstadt (Palatinate) on 1/18/1735.They arrived in MD via the "Loyal Judith" and settled near Smithburg. The only child mentioned in Gottfried's will (Frederick Co. MD, Liber A, No. 1, Folio 37) is Catharine, but it is apparent that he had a son George Nicholas (born in Europe) born about 1730, and also a son DeWalt, born 1746.The George Nicholas branch continues with sons Jacob, Henry, and John, as well as daughters Catharine, Eva, and Mary.My line is from DeWalt, who died in 1801 ( m. Mary Hughitt 1754-1821), and whose sons included a Jacob (!) 1786-1845, and grandson Jacob Jackson Mong (1817-1876).
Gottfried's father was Theobald Mang, but the records get very tenuous and foggy if one tries to go farther back than this. Both Gottfried and Theobald were weavers, though I assume in emigrating that new occupations were necessary for survival.Apparently the lands just to the west of Washington Co. were still held by Indians in 1739, so these people had to be true homesteaders.
I have some connections and other information that may prove interesting to anyone who has Mong lineage near the Hagerstown MD area 1739-1800 or so.
