A Non-Paternity Event for Joanthan Moody, grandson of Clement Moody??
After additional review of records we have and discussing with Mel Moody, known to many of you as an astute and experienced student of New England Moodys, I/we have settled on the following reasonable scenario to explain the Jonathan Moody-Elizabeth Gordon ydna discrepancy from its expected result matching the Clement line.
All the records available point to there being just one Jonathan Moody of Brentwood born 1726-30, not two. I previously mentioned the possibility of an adoption: Clement>Jonathan or Jonathan> Jonathan. If Jonathan Sr's wife Joanna was already pregnant by young husband who died accidentally/suddenly when she married Jonathan, this would explain why the baby was named Jonathan...its even possible that Joanna was not a widow, but already pregnant when she married Jonathan..our ancestors did have the same weaknesses as we do today, after all without benefit of birth control. and yes, "forcible rape" happened back then too.So if this is true, Jonathan, Jr. is the result of an "alternative paternity event" as the ydna terminology goes.
The Clement Moodys are already aware of an alternative paternity event between Beedes and Moodys believed to have occurred when a son of Smallpox Joe of Brentwood brought smallpox back from the Indian Wars infecting and killing many in the town, including some of his children and wife.We some of his children survived "orphans who depended on the town for support. It is surmised that Daniel Beede a prominent member of the town and a selectman took in Nathaniel and raised him as a beede. This is supported by Nathaniel's birthyear being prior to Daniel's marriage to Patience presscott.None of the descendants of their other children match the Clement Moodys.
I plan to keep looking for any earlier marriage record in Brentwood for a Joanna just a year or two prior to 1725-26..unfortunately her maiden name remains obscure. there could also be a will around that time which names wife joanna.
