If anyone is even considering taking a DNA test to hopefully see if it will help to get through your brick wall genealogically...I urge you to only consider taking No Less than a 37 marker test and here is why. My Father took a 37 marker test last year and when the results came back it appeared as though we had a match to another Mr. Moody. He however had only taken a 25 marker test, so we knew we matched Exactly 25/25. I was elated and overwhelmed to say the least that we even had a match right off the bat.I spent hours and hours researching this other Mr. Moody's lineage line trying to find any clues that would help to break down the brick wall I had been up against for years with my own Moody family line and once again I could Not find anything beyond what ~Appeared~ to be our Common 5th grt. grandfather James Moody.
Fast Foward several months and I ordered yet another DNA test kit for my Father from another company who at the time did a 43 marker test. I had read that the More Markers you test the better chances for eliminating mis-matches and for being able to narrow down your Haplogroup subclade more precisely. This company also offered a specific marker that I wanted my Father tested for which would hopefully tell us more what region of the globe his ancient ancestors came from. The 43 marker test achieved both things I was hoping for and that has been a great deal of help.
Fast Foward again several months and another match to another Mr. Moody at 25 markers looked Very Promising. Once again I was elated because this one had a persons lineage back further than my 5th grt. grandfathers did.I was so hopeful and all excited. However, when his 37 marker results came in, it showed that SIX markers (mutations) were OFF, which means NO MATCH, NO COMMON ANCESTOR!! We matched 24/25 at the 25 marker level but at the Very End of the 37 marker chain it all fell apart. We are both of the Same Surname too which is why the DNA testing company was a bit taken aback I believe and commented to the effect that they might have to re-evalute what they have been telling everyone.
So, this is why I say, the 25 marker test results you may get with another person of your Same Surname could be giving you False Hopes!!The ONLY way to tell if you have a Solid match will be for Both of the participants at 25/25 to Upgrade to a 37 marker test and then see what your results will be.
If you are considering taking the DNA test, I Highly recommend you take nothing less than the 37 marker test. That way you won't be disappointed down the road.
