Thanks for your reply David A. The names and dates you have supplied appear to corrolate well with the information I have. It seems reasonable to assume that we are referring to the same Richard & family. The mystery for me is that it seems that only part of the family emigrated ie Richard snr, Richard jnr, George James, Peter Edward & Paul. My theory at the moment is that son John and mother Elizabeth did not emigrate due to death. The rest of the family may have been looking for a new start outside England as a result (alternatively was there such a thing as divorce back in the 1800's?).
If Richard snr had brothers Richard (is this Richard an early death?)/Peter/James then I would be most interested to see more of those branches. I must say that early deaths, reuse of names of deceased siblings and repeat names can be most frustrating. Richards jnr's middle name is Fairhurst and he married Ellen Clarke in Austr and guess what they had a son name Richard Fairhurst. Tracking that in Aust Births & Deaths was most confusing until I took more notice of the dates!
