Greetings Harry, having just read your request re Thomas & Alice Moorhouse who lived in the Grassington area of Yorkshire, I think the following info is very applicable. In the nearby parish of Linton (in Craven) the church register contains the following entries: - (If people lived in the countryside between two villages it was not uncommon for them to register their children at either village church, depending on which one taxed them least at the time)
Linton (in Craven)
Moorhouse, Moses bapt 22 Oct 1818 son of Thomas & Alice Moorhouse, Edward bapt 16 Jul 1821 son of Thomas & Alice
Moorhouse, Thomas bapt 12 Mar 1797 son of Edward
further children of Edward …… siblings of Thomas:
Moorhouse, John bapt 8 Aug 1790 son of Edward Moorhouse, William bapt 17 Feb 1793 son of Edward Moorhouse, Alice bapt 29 Mar 1795 Dau of Edward Moorhouse, Martha bapt 18 Jun 1799 dau of Edward Moorhouse, Edward bapt 9 May 1803 son of Edward Moorhouse, Edward bapt 10 Feb 1805 son of Edward Moorhouse, Ann bapt 8 May 1808 dau of Edward
Moorhouse, Edward bapt3 Aug 1766 son of John
Likely siblings …….Moorhouse, Margaret bapt 28 Aug 1763 dau of John Moorhouse, Robertbapt 19 Feb 1766
Unfortunately I have not personally sighted this register so do not have occupation details which may help sort the children attributed to John Moorhouse ( from 1763 to 1787) but it is clear from the number of entries (25) that more than one John Moorhouse was registering children here during that period.
Marriages include the following:
John Moorhouse married 22 Jul 1760 to Isabel Place (of Grassington)(Probably your John considering the location given the bride) John Moorhouse married 22 May 1764 to Ann Paley John Moorhouse married 6 Jan 1766 to Sarah Metcalf.
As Edward was baptised in 1766 all three are possibilities and further research in this register is necessary.
Edward Moorhouse married in 1789 but unfortunately details have been misreported in my records and will need re-checking.He is variously shown as marrying on the 23 October or 23 November 1789 to Addie Jones,or to Adde Lowes, or to Edde Lowes. Perhaps the original text is very difficult to read and transcribers have given it their best guess!!! This was at Linton (in Craven).
The marriage of Thomas Moorhouse to Alice Wright occurred on 11 May 1818 at Linton(in Craven)
Trust this helps you find your family roots.
Grassington, Rylstone, Burnsall, Giggleswick and Kirkby Malham parish registers are those closest located to Linton (in Craven) and may be worth searching for peripheral relatives. I would be prepared to help with any further inquiries.
