Hello Alan, your family is almost surely from the Northern part of England originally. There is a suitable birth record at Linton in Craven, Yorkshire for Edward Moorhouse bpt 11 Mar 1821 son of John Moorhouse and Ellen [nee Lee] Does you marriage certificate give an age at marriage or do you have an age at death in Australia? Either would confirm this. If this is not a match could you please give me an estimated birth year for Edward based on what you know. The place they were in in Wales [Rhymney], was in the heart of the ironsmelting area and he almost certainly worked in this industry as either a coalminer or ironworker. From Sth Australian records I have to hand I glean that he had children John b 28 Oct 1855, Edward b 7 Jun 1857, Miles 15th May 1860, Martin Lyon b 9 Mar 1862 and Margaret Mabel b 4 Apr 1864.Of these I only have confirmed records for Margaret, but Martin obviously fits too. Oddly matching birth records for Martin and Miles also occur at Ralph's Bay Tasmania, so I'm now not sure whether they were b. S.A. or Tasmania. Margaret Martin Moorhouse married in Sth Australia. Martin Lyon Moorhouse married 12 Aug 1891 at Clarence Tasmania to Florence Emily Farman Richardson and Miles married Henrietta Ethel Richardson 18 Mar 1890 at Franklin Tasmania. Presumably the two Richardson girls were related. Miles & Henrietta had children Ernest William b 4 Jul 1892 at Hobart, Daisy Margaret b. 30 Jun 1894 at Hobart, Vera Mabel b. 25 Feb 1897 at Brighton, Tas., and Nina Jessie b. 12 Mar 1899 at Lilydale, Tas. Martin & Florence had children George Edward b. 20 May 1892 at Hobart, Percy Lyon b. 1 Jan 1894 at Hobart, Doris Emily b. 25 Apr 1896 at Hobart, and Herbert Martin b. 6 Aug 1899 at Hobart. Electoral Rolls for 1914 show George Edward, law clerk still living at home with [widowed?] mother Florence Emily at 164 Davey St Sth Hobart. 1919 Electoral rolls same but with daughter Doris Emily , shop assistant there too. Percy Lyons also appears in this E.R. a carter, living at 58 Jordan Hill Rd, Hobart Nth. with Doris Myrtle presumably his wife. 1922 E. Rolls have family at two addresses so shifted from 164 Davey St to 22 Peddar St, New Town, Denison, Tas that year. Herbert Martin, carpenter, George Edward , clerk still at home with mother Florence. The use of the name Miles, [if he is part of your family] is the one factor that definitely places the family origin in North England as All Moorhouses of that forename can be traced there. Many are from Cumbria but Linton is not far south of that and some Cumbrian branches of the family drifted into that area. Cheers Mark Moorhouse, Moorhouse Family Historian. PS Would be interested in any further Australian details you have on the family.
