I can appreciate your difficulties in tracing Rev. James Moorhouse because he was christened under the surname Morris which the family was listed under in parish registers from approximately 1620 to 1780 in the Whalley,Padiham (Lancs.) area by the unlettered clerics of the day. Prior to this Morehouse and Moorhouse were used (cf Clitheroe Parish register). James Morris was baptized at Whalley on Aug 11 1765 His father being James Morris an alehouse keeper at Pendleton. James married Grace Riley at Whalley 28 Dec 1781 (by banns) both were underage and the register states "with consent of parents". The witnesses were George Moorhouse and John Slater. This reference to George MOORHOUSE being the first using the proper spelling of the family name for over 100 years. After converting to Methodism James also adpoted the old spelling ie Moorhouse. His oldest son Enoch retain Morris longer than most other family members. I have a history of his ministry copied from an old book called "Methodism in Rossendale" Which I will post here fairly soon. I am a direct descendant living in Nelson New Zealand. His son John was an engineer who lived in Bacup and married twice. First to Betty Wilkinson and then to Ann Wilson. I descend from his son also Rev James Moorhouse who shifted to New Zealand in the 1860's.
Does anyone have documentation of John's birth or baptism. It occurred c1800 in the Rossendale area or possibly Padiham but just at a time when Methodism was being established and records very sketchy?
