As you read the above response by Mary Stewart and the original post that I made, you will see that Mary and I have differing opinions on this issue. For any of you who follow this forum, you know that Mary is probably the most knowledgeable person around on this part of the Moorman family. She has helped hundreds on this forum.I am likely to get my nose knocked off by sticking it into the Moorman family.
I am descended from James Adams, the defendant in this action. He was probably the bad guy in this whole deal.Elizabeth was not the only one who had issues with him over the years.
My interest in the Moorman’s comes from my attempt to identify all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Robert and Mourning Adams of Goochland. They had about 97 grandchildren that I have identified. There are probably between 500 and 700 great grandchildren.Maybe more. Two of Robert and Mourning’s daughters married Moorman’s.I have just two grandchildren and I’m tired.
The outside fold ofElizabeth and Andrew Moorman’s Chancery complaint has dates starting in November 1784 (apparently when it was filed ) and ending in July (maybe August) of 1786.After the final date is the work “Death”.I do not know who died.James Adams died in 1789, so it wasn’t him.His brother, Robert, who was the other defendant most likely died in 1875.It may have been him.
Mary is certainly correct that the answer filed by James Adams appears to be talking about children of his sisters and not the sisters themselves.
In the Albemarle Chancery records there is a case from 1786, case 1786-003, which is Elizabeth Moorman vs James Adams. The images for this case are not on line as of this time. Was this a continuation of the original case after “Death”??There are only two James Adams that I am aware of in the Fluvanna-Albemarle area at that time -Capt James Adams, the defendant in the above complaint, and his son James Adams, Jr.At this point I am assuming that the Albemarle complaint is against Capt James, because his son was almost always referred to as James Adams, jnr.
Hopefully soon we will have access to those Albemarle images, or perhaps someone will be able to report on the contents of that file.It may have nothing at all to do with this case.
I can’t speak for Mary, but I am 99.9% sure that, just like me, she wants to find the truth.Neither of us has some type of agenda that we are trying to force people to fit into.Things will certainly be simpler for me if Mary is correct, because the Robert Adams descendants of Elizabeth Moorman, as I have them, are based on the facts as Mary states them.
