Hannah Sutton Morden

By Diane Bourgault January 19, 2005 at 08:19:28

I may have foud a solution to a problem which has puzzled me for a few years.
John Morden, son of Ralph and Anne Durham Morden, married a Hannah Sutton, but no one seemed to have information about her parents. My family said that Hannah was the sister of my ggg grandfather, John Sutton, of New Jersey and Ontario, but our written records showed no Hannah in that generation, only a Joanna, and an Anna.
I just found a book at HeritageQuest Online, called

Abstracts of divisions of Warren and Sussex County Estates filed at Sussex County courthouse, Newton, New Jersey, from 1789-1918, by Frederick R. Alleman, page 16, CA 165

in which the heirs of William Sutton are listed as follows:
       Elizabeth, w/o David Cummins
       John Sutten
       Joanna, w/o John Marden
       Mary, w/o Rebut Albertson
       Anna, w/o William Sharpe
       Micajah Sutten
       Prudence, w/o Ebenezer Drake
       Keziah, w/o Clerkson Shotwell
       Margaret Sutten
       Jerusha, w/o Peter Coole

Recorded November 11, 1816

(I have copied the spelling exactly as it was in the “original”)

From this, it looks as if Hannah and Joanna are the same person. The parents of John and Joanna/Hannah were William and Anne Hawkins of Sussex County, New Jersey. The family moved to the Dundas Ontario area in 1800, and then to Westminster Twp., Middlesex County, Ont. in 1818.

Is my theory plausible?
