It is nice to have some discussion on this Morel board again! First, I just want to say I am not related directly to the Morel's but I am descended from Henry Gindrat, Susannah's father, through another daughter, Rhoda. I stumbled upon this Benjamin Morel mystery while I was researching the Gindrat's and posted what I found hoping to further the research on the Morel's. I still lean towards the idea that Lt. Benjamin Morel was the son of Peter Morel and Mary Goldwire. There are a few reasons why.
Peter Morel was named in the will of Benjamin Goldwire in 1766 as the husband of his daughter Mary Goldwire. Peter Morel was also on a Petit Grand Juror List in 1767 where he did not show. He had a daughter named Nancy who died July 20, 1786 as recorded in Savannah. I have not found any mention of him after that. Peter Morel was named in his father Peter (or Pierre) Morel's will in 1752 along will his siblings. So there was a Peter Morel who was the son of Pierre the immigrant from Switzerland who was married to Mary Goldwire. Did they have a son named Benjamin?
Benjamin Morel served as executor on Benjamin Goldwire's will in 1788. He named his daughter Mary G.(is it Gindrat or could it be Goldwire after his mother?). Judge Clark would have been very familiar with the Gindrat and Morel families, so he would have known if Benjamin was related to John Morel of Ossabaw.
I know also from experience that entire branches of families are sometimes left out of recorded histories, but that does not mean they don't exist. So it is possible that Benjamin's parentage and family were accidentally omitted because his father died young (probably around 1767) and Benjamin had closer ties to the Goldwire's than his Morel family. Again, it's just a theory, and I would gladly post any other Morel info I happen to find in the interest of solving the Benjamin Morel mystery for his many descendants. Good luck in your search,
