Jules Auguste Morein (Morin?), b. ca. 1812, d. ca. 1849 in LA?
I'm working with a client here in VA on his Morein line. Here is what I know.Jules Auguste Morein Sr. was born in France ca. 1812, and believed to have died while visiting New Orleans on business around 1849.He was married in Norfolk, VA, to Sarah Ann Fitz in 1834.He sired 3 children:Jules Auguste Morein Jr., Claudia V. Morein, and Ella/Ellen Morein Bonney, wife of William A. Bonney. All three children, plus the widow, lived and died in Norfolk, VA.
Jules A. Morein Sr. was a painter by trade, painting portraits, landscapes, and miniatures. He worked a circuit running from Norfolk to Charleston and on around to New Orleans. Some of his work has been anthologized in two collections of 19th century American painting.
He seems to have avoided capture in any census document. His widow, with the three children plus her mother, appears in the 1850 census for Norfolk, without the presence of her husband. She is reported in the 1851 city directory for Norfolk as "widow J. Auguste Morein".Marriage bonds for Norfolk Co., VA, record his name as "John A. Morein."
An LDS member posted extracted birth info for "Jules Auguste Morin" born January 12, 1814, Notre Dame De Bonne Nouvelle Parish, Paris, Seine, France. This citation is in the right ballpark, but may well be a happy coincidence. What's exciting in the citation is a father Claude, who may be the inspiration for Jules A. Morein's daughter Claudia.
Any help with this line, or suggestions, would be welcome.Morin/Morein researchers are encouraged to contact me directly at [email protected], with any concrete leads.
