For several years now I have been looking for her birth mother. All I have succeeded in finding is a brick wall.So I am going to concede that Hesira F. Mosley is my great grandmother by using the following points. Everything points to her and they are listed below.
1. Dannie Mae Johnson was born 10 Nov 1881 either in OK or Texas. No record of birth in either state exists. No Marriage certificate of Hesira in either Texas or Oklahoma can be found. Of course she could have died from a disease of whatever. Hesira F. is listed in the 1870 Census at home of Daniel H. Mosley and Harriett E. Mosley in Brown County, TX The 1880 Census she is not listed anywhere or after. The 1890 Census was burned in a warehouse fire in Brownwood, so is not available. She does not show up in Any other year’s census. Dannie’s Marriage License has nothing on it to indicate place of birth, just date. Death certificate has her place of birth as unknown and mothers name as unknown.
2.The points that convince me that Hesira is my great grand mother. Daniel and Harriet Mosley had 6 daughters. Euphama B; 1853, Francis E. B: 1850, Christian B: 1857, Hesira F. B: 1863, Cordelia B: 1868, and Ellen L. B: 1872, All in Brown County, TX. All of the girls married except Hesira and Cordelia. In the 1900 Census, Dannie Mae is living with a William Pierce andhis wife Ellen L (Mosley). Ellen is the younger sister of Hesira. Also in the home is Harriett Mosley, wife of Daniel H. Mosley, Hesira‘s mother, Hesira’s Father Died in 1892 We have always heard the story of the 16 year old who ran away with a older cowboy, A.C. Johnson, who came to Brown County, TX on a cattle drive from Louisiana. In 1880 Hesira would have been 16. Her younger sister, Cordelia was 12. She also cannot be found after 1880. No marriage or death certificate. A man named Willis Johnson, who was a rancher in Mills County, TX, was charged with abduction of a minor as he helped her to run away, but was shot and killed before the trial. No court records can be found as we looked at the court records in Brown County. This story is also in the book written by James White in 1941 Titled “The Promised Land” A History of Brown County, TX. So after years of searching I have come to the conclusion that Hesira F. Mosley is My Great Grandmother. If anyone has information otherwise, Please let me know. Thanks
