John was born in Killyleagh, Co. Downs, Ireland in 1709.He had grown to be a stalwart young manned and was noted in the County for his great strength and prowess in the field of sports of his day. He married Elizabeth Herdman in 1746, who died in Ireland at the age of 71.Their children were James, Francis, Eleanor, Nancy, Allen, John, Lillas, and William Herdman Mossman. When sons, Joan and William, and daughter Lillas came to America, John came with them.The youngest son, Allen had died young and was buried in Ireland. They came with a large group of Scotch-Irish emigrants that landed at Wilmington, DE, on Mar. 25, 1970.They went west to Harford Co., MD, where they took up farming.Lillas married Isaac Moreland, and lived to be 83 years old.John with his sons moved out to new lands in Fayette County PA, in 1795. The sons Francis and William, and then John cleared the wilderness and built homes in what became Mercer Co., PA.Poor old John was obliged to tag along, at his advanced age, in 1799. John died in 1802.He was buried on son Francis's land.His grave marked the beginning of Rock Ridge Cemetery (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pamercer/PA/Cemetery/rockridge/rockridge.htm) Daughter, Nelly, married Mr. Harris in Ireland.She lived to be 83. Daughter, Nancy, married Mr. Richardson in Ireland.She died at 95.
